Lack of use and life changes mean that our beautiful old Merc is up for sale. We’ve had it for 16 years and lived in it for 13 of those years so it is tried and tested live-in conversion. It’s going to be wrench to let it go but it needs more attention than we can give it at the mo and it’s time to pass it on to someone else for the next part of the story.
Don’t know the true mileage, it was bus that was in service for the first 12 or 13 years of its life so it’s going to be high (was doing up to 10K miles month according to the old service tickets). Done around 9K over last years, including 4.5K round Europe years ago. Current MOT runs until 21st July 2020.
The interior is in really good nick and has lovely homely feel about it, mostly real wood and well constructed with loads of storage space. There’s no toilet/shower/sink or the like as space was more important in live in van, but there is room for 20 or 25L water butts and foot pump and tap which works well using bowls for washing and so on. Solar panel (90w) on the roof with 15a Steca charge regulator supplying  110ah batteries in the boot and interior electrics are all 12V, there is also spilt charger which feeds in from the engine via voltage dropper to reduce from 24V. Very efficient wood burner means that the bus is warmer in the winter than our current house!
The bodywork needs attention though, particularly below the floor line, the front end, and around the windscreen as I’ve tried to show in the pictures.  Also the floor round the engine cover. We took part of the interior out about or years ago, cut the floor out and had the rear part of the subframe re-built.
Mechanically these old OM314 engines are simple and really reliable and most things are easy to access and work on, I’ve learnt lot working on this old bus as had pretty much no idea when we first got it. Most comfortable at about 45-50mph and will give 20 to 25 mpg just sit back, relax and enjoy the widescreen views from the driver’s seat. It has great low ratio crawler gear that’ll get you up anything at about 5mph. Some advisories on last MOT, most have come up few years running without really deteriorating. have bought some spares to sort these out, not happened but parts will go with the vehicle.
